Barbie goes Web 2.0

Shiny Shiny is reporting that mattel has launched “Barbie Girls Beta”, aiming Web 2.0 right at the heart of mass consumerism and feeding body dismorphic problems and emptying the wallets of already strapped parents to make their kids happy.

Mattel have today announced what they’re calling “the next generation of fashion doll play with Barbie Girls™, an unparalleled, hybrid play experience that blends fashion, music and an online virtual world.” Source: Shiny Shiny

The Barbie Site is here and offers design, community, chat, and a whole host of other Web 2.0 things, including the obligatory “BETA” tag. We personally don’t have anything against barbie, it has been a hugely successful toy for girls. And their entry into the Web 2.0 world means that business is starting to figure out how to use Web 2.0 elements to lure customers. What is interesting is aiming the whole thing at the kids who are growing up with the Web, and Web 2.0.
